Ball Lightning Created In A Lab

Ball lightning could soon lose its status as a mystery, now that a team in Brazil has cooked up a simple recipe for making similar eerie orbs of light in the lab, even getting them to bounce around for several seconds. Watch a movie of the bouncing balls here.

Thousands of people have reported seeing ball lightning, a luminous sphere that sometimes appears during thunderstorms. It is typically the size of a grapefruit and lasts for a few seconds or minutes, sometimes hovering, even bouncing along the ground.

One eyewitness saw a glowing ball burn through the screen door of a house in Oregon, navigate down to the basement and wreck an old mangle, while in another report, a similar orb bounced on a Russian teacher's head more than 20 times before vanishing.

One theory suggests that ball lightning is a highly ionised blob of plasma held together by its own magnetic fields, while an exotic explanation claims the cause is mini black holes created in the big bang.

Global Warming in 2007

LONDON - A resurgent El Nino and persistently high levels of greenhouse gases are likely to make 2007 the world's hottest year ever recorded, British climate scientists said Thursday. Britain's Meteorological Office said there was a 60 percent probability that 2007 would break the record set by 1998, which was 1.20 degrees over the long-term average.
"This new information represents another warning that climate change is happening around the world," the office said. The reason for the forecast is mostly due to El Nino, a cyclical warming trend now under way in the Pacific Ocean. The event occurs irregularly — the last one happened in 2002 — and typically leads to increased temperatures worldwide.
While this year's El Nino is not as strong as it was in 1997 and 1998, its combination with the steady increase of temperatures due to global warming from human activity may be enough to break the Earth's temperature record, said Phil Jones, the director of the Climatic Research unit at the University of East Anglia. "Because of the warming due to greenhouse gases, even a moderate warming event is enough to push the global temperatures over the top," he said.
"El Nino is an independent variable," he said. "But the underlying trends in the warming of the Earth is almost certainly due to the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere."
El Nino can sometimes lead to milder weather, such as in the in the northeastern United States or the Atlantic Ocean, which is likely to see fewer hurricanes this year. However, it can also increase the severity of weather-related disasters, such as typhoons in the Philippines or drought in southern Africa and Australia, a country that is already suffering through its longest dry spell on record.
Environmental groups said the report added weight to the movement to control greenhouse gases. "The evidence that we're doing something very dangerous with the climate is now amassing," said Campaign against Climate Change coordinator Philip Thornhill.
"We need to put the energy and priority (into climate change) that is being put into a war effort. It's a political struggle to get action done — and these reports help," Thornhill said.

Endless hours spent perfecting your golf swing or basketball shot could be a waste of time, according to a new study which shows that practice does not always make perfect.
Mark Churchland and colleagues at Stanford University in California, US, made the discovery after training macaque monkeys to repeat a simple reaching task thousands of times.
"The nervous system was not designed to do the same thing over and over again," says Churchland, whose team investigated the way the brain plans and calculates motion.
The team showed the monkeys a colored spot and rewarded them for reaching out to touch it at different speeds. During the exercise, they monitored the promoter cortex of the monkeys' brains, which is the region responsible for movement planning, and tracked the speed of the resulting motion.
Over the course of thousands of reaches, the monkeys rarely moved with exactly the same speed. Small variations in reach speed followed small variations in brain activity during movement planning, the researchers say.

I wanted to give a nice shout out to EVERYONE who either called in or emailed, and my gosh, there were TONS OF YOU, regarding my wonderful show on COAST TO COAST on December 19th. It was a blast, and your amazing emails made me realize just how truly connected we all are. Thank you everyone for taking the time to contact me, it was humbling. AND thanks to George and his awesome production staff. They were incredibly supportive and I hope they will invite me on again soon. It was fun staying up so late - haven't done that much since I had a child!!! LOL! Oh wait, I take that back, that entire FIRST YEAR was rather Sleepless in San Diego, so to speak!!! Now I am usually in bed with a good book or two or three by, say, about 9pm!

An invisibility cloak that works in the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum has been unveiled in the US. While not quite as effective as Harry Potter's invisibility cloak, the device is the first practical version of a theoretical set-up first suggested by physicists earlier this year. About the size of a movie reel canister, the cloak works by steering microwave light around an object, making it appear to an observer as if it were not there at all.

Chandra Reviews Black Hole Musical: Epic But Off-key
A gigantic sonic boom generated by a supermassive black hole has been found with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, along with evidence for a cacophony of deep sound.

This discovery was made by using data from the longest X-ray observation ever of M87, a nearby giant elliptical galaxy. M87 is centrally located in the Virgo cluster of galaxies and is known to harbor one of the Universe's most massive black holes.
Scientists detected loops and rings in the hot, X-ray emitting gas that permeates the cluster and surrounds the galaxy. These loops provide evidence for periodic eruptions that occurred near the supermassive black hole, and that generate changes in pressure, or pressure waves, in the cluster gas that manifested themselves as sound.
"We can tell that many deep and different sounds have been rumbling through this cluster for most of the lifetime of the Universe," said William Forman of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). The outbursts in M87, which happen every few million years, prevent the huge reservoir of gas in the cluster from cooling and forming many new stars. Without these outbursts and resultant heating, M87 would not be the elliptical galaxy it is today.

I have been a fringe freak since I was a child. You know, one of those people drawn to the paranormal, the unusual, the mysterious...But as the daughter of a scientist, I also had an early passion for hard science and the laws of the universe. Later I would study metaphysics and become a New Thought minister, and it was only a matter of time before my love of all three worlds converged. The paranormal. Science. Metaphysics. My new book "PSIence: How New Discoveries in Quantum Physics and New Science May Explain the Existence of Paranormal Phenomena" comes out in November of 2006 by New Page Books and explores the intersection of the known and the unknown. Everyday I see a headline or find an article in a science mag or journal that brings even more understanding to the connections between science and the paranormal, and I will share many of those stories and links right here.

You don't have to believe anything I write about, but I would like you to keep an open mind. Reality is not what we think it is, yet it is what we think it is. That's the paradox of existence, folks. Apparently, quantum physics tells us that we, the observer, have far more to do with our reality than we think. Yet at the same time, we don't have a clue...well, maybe we have a clue or two. But we sure don't know the truth yet about how our universe works. We can only theorize.
